A great horned owl by Eric Kilby

Where are they from?

The great horned owl lives in mostly open woodlands and in some swamps. They can be found across most of North America.

What do they eat?

Great horned owls eat mostly small mammals such as mice, but will eat any mammal it can prey upon. They have an incredibly varied diet and can prey upon animals ranging from small rodents to large raptors.

How do they act?

They are territorial creatures that try to defend themselves by scaring predators away with varying noises before using their wings and claws if necessary. They are monogamous birds that will stay in the same territory with their mate, even outside breeding season. However, the pair will roost separately until a few months before eggs are laid.

Are they endangered?

Great horned owls are listed as “Least Concern” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

Bird Blurb

The great horned owl has very soft down feathers that make it an agile, quiet hunter. It will sometimes pull these out of its own chest to line their nests.

Did you know owls can turn their heads to look behind them without moving their body?
