DESCRIPTION:Forestry Outreach Center volunteer Abigail Kingston is holding a launch meeting for Tiny Forest\, a suburban rewilding project serving Richmond\, Berea and the surrounding area. Tiny Forest seeks to establish a network of volunteers to grow\, transplant\, and raise native tree saplings and other native plants\, which will be given away for free to homeowners interested in creating a “tiny forest”—a small oasis of “wild” habitat to support birds\, pollinators\, and other living things that have lost essential habitat to lawn and pavement. Volunteers are needed to provide supplies like finished compost and pots for plants\, to keep and care for plants\, to supply seeds and seedlings\, and to offer ideas for how to get Tiny Forest thriving. Do you have seedling trees in your yard or garden that need to be moved? Have you collected seeds from native trees and wildflowers? Do you know someone who wants to get rid of their lawn\, but doesn’t know how to start? We would love to hear from you!

SUMMARY:Free Trees And Backyard Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on workshop for homeowners and curious people who want to learn about the biodiversity in their back yards and how to shape them into better habitats for less time and money than a traditional lawn.\nHi\, I’m Abigail! I’m a gardener with a perspective/approach of learning from and observing what natural processes are doing in human-shaped environments. Over the spring and summer\, I started learning to identify plants and I noticed that tree saplings were growing in the tidy lawns and pavement cracks around me\, and I realized that lawn and garden management techniques are focused on fighting against nature without understanding what nature is doing or why\, rather than observing nature to learn how to better take care of it.\nWe will be searching for the pockets of biodiversity and resilience that exist in lawn and roadside environments and the hints of natural restorative and healing processes happening even in heavily managed areas\, and a nature walk demonstrating ecological succession and what a healthier\, more biodiverse environment looks like.\nNot only will you be able to pick up some free native trees while supplies last\, you’ll also learn to notice the free trees that probably already exist in your surroundings.
