“A tree can only be as strong as the forest that surrounds it… Their well-being depends on their community.” – Peter Wohlleben, The Hidden Life of Trees

Learn to identify trees!

The Berea College Forest is home to many different tree species. Check out this (incomplete) list of some of the trees you can find in the Forest, identified by their leaves! This list was compiled by Trent Powell, a student employee that worked at the Center in the summer of 2018! Click the link below!

Trees communicate?

In a recent TED Talk from 2016, Suzanne Simard, a forester who has published many studies and works, discusses her research done with the forest understory. In her research, she found that there is a whole ecosystem, or “family,” of interconnected trees giving and receiving carbon.

Simard found that trees also have “family units” among which they share more heavily their excess carbon supplies. Through research such as this, Simard hopes to help the world better understand the lives of trees and the ways in which they coexist.
